Video to DVD & CD: Compatibility DVDs produced in large quantities are mechanically pressed from a "Glass Master". This master is the end result of a very carefully controlled (and fairly expensive) process but thousands of DVD copies can be quickly and cheaply pressed from the master. The digital information on these pressed discs is imprinted on the DVD in the form of minute bumps on a spiral track and can be read by the laser on any DVD player - there can still be the odd problem with some machines not liking certain DVDs but this is fairly rare. DVDs produced in small quantities are "burnt" directly by laser onto a blank disc. The laser changes the colour of a dye coated on the disc during burning depending on the digital information, these colour changes are not so efficient at reflecting the laser light as the bumps of a pressed disc and some DVD players cannot reliably read the information. It is estimated that about 80% of older machines will play these "burnt" DVDs, with newer players faring rather better. There are other factors that affect compatability so before committing your video to DVD we can loan you a test DVD to check whether your machine will play a burnt disc OK.
