Corporate and industrial productions

Video is the ideal medium to present your corporate message or to demonstrate products and services. It is readily accessible to everybody, both in the UK and abroad, and it has a perceived value which means it is less likely to be filed in the bin than printed material!

There is unfortunately a misconception that video is expensive to produce, but in fact it compares favourably with the cost of brochure production without the need for large print runs to reduce printing costs. You can call off VHS, CDROM or DVD copies in the quantities you need, just when you need them. It can be updated economically unlike printed material, (when new phone numbers, Email addresses or website information becomes available for example) and the shot footage can be re-edited to present a new message whenever you like, or be encoded to CDROM, DVD or even for inclusion on your website.

OK, so how much does it cost to make a good quality corporate programme? The honest answer is that it costs as much as your budget will allow. For example, a 30 second TV ad. can cost £millions but an hour long seminar, filmed and edited, may only cost £1,000 - the variation is that great.

Having said that, most of our corporate productions cost between £5-£15,000 with some a bit less and some a lot more. The difference between a £5k and a £15k video is NOT one of quality, only of the time involved. That is, how much filming time, editing time, creative development time etc. is applied to the production.

There are three stages to producing a video. These are pre-production, which is the development of the programme structure and script, filming, and post-production or the editing process.

Ideally it should be approached in this order, but there are occasions, such as where we have to shoot a special event at short notice, when we shoot first and ask questions later as it were.

So what is pre-production? This is the stage which starts with kicking around a few ideas (and dare I say fantasies?) and ends up as a focussed coherent script for a programme that can be produced within budget. You wont get the helicopter shots, shall we say, from a £5k budget unless you own the helicopter!

Anyway, as with all successful projects, the more thorough the front end work is, the better the completed programme will be.

Rather than start with the dreaded blank piece of paper, we have devised a basic Briefing form (feel free to print it off) which addresses some of the basic questions you need to ask yourselves at the start.

Q5 for example, asks if there is a deadline for completion. This could be an exhibition or conference where the programme will be beneficial to the company, or it might coincide with a planned mail shot. Having a deadline is useful as it means the production can be concentrated on for a fairly short period of time and the investment realised quickly.

During the pre-production period we will develop a Production schedule so that time is used efficiently, which is particularly important when it comes to stage two, filming. There is no point in having a film crew on site if the set's not ready.

Just for the record, we normally film on broadcast quality DVCAM equipment which records the footage in digital format. This is important as it means there will be no drop in quality during the editing stage which is done on our own in-house digital edit suite.

Here the pictures are cut with sound, music, effects, graphics etc. Initially, we produce an off-line edit which is a basic cut of the material according to the script for you to check that the visual and audio content is correct. Once you are happy, we produce the on-line master.

Throughout all the production stages the important thing to remember is that video production is a team effort. SCRENE working with you to make sure your message is delivered as you want it, on time and within budget.
