Do it yourself editing Now that you have shot your epic you will need to edit it. There are two ways of doing this and which one you choose will depend on your budget and what you want to do with the final programme. It is usual, when making a video, to do a quick rough or off-line edit to get the shape, rhythm and timing of the programme before going on to do the final or on-line edit. The other option is to dive in at the deep end and go straight to the on-line. At SCRENE we have two simple edit suites which we hire out on a self drive basis so you can take your pick. Suite 1 is VHS to VHS which is fine for off-lines and for tidying up some domestic footage, but not so good if you want to make copies of the completed programme as VHS is the lowest quality of all the video formats. Bearing in mind that videotape editing is copying bits of one tape onto another, the edited version is second generation and a copy would be third generation, or a copy of a copy. If that doesn't bother you, it is cheap and easy to use. Suite 2 is a highband Umatic suite which gives significantly better results than VHS. First you have to copy across to Umat tape the sections of your shot masters you want to edit and then edit the programme onto another Umat tape. The end result will be subjectively as good as the quality of your shot tapes and will give good quality VHS copies. Once you've done your off-line edit, why not let us do the on-line or final edit for you on one of our computer controlled main edit suites where we can add titles, effects, captions, sound & vision mixing, voice over and music?
